MITSURU ANDO
Born 1983
Mitsuru Ando paints new Japanese paintings based on traditional Japanese painting styles of Suiboku-ga and Rin-ha. His central motifs include giant trees worshipped by animists, biomes where tiny life forms gather, and slime molds that fight on a cell-by-cell basis. For Mitsuru, nature becomes an extension of his self. His work examines the similarities between the complex balance of nature based on Eastern thought and the systems of the human body.
His work has been highly acclaimed, having been selected five times for FACE, Japan's most difficult painting competition, and winning the Chief Judge's Prize at the Liquitex Art Prize.
